Incremental encoders are rotary or linear sensors that generate a series of pulses as they move, typically using two output channels to determine direction. They measure relative motion by counting these pulses from a known starting position, providing high resolution and speed measurement capabilities. Unlike absolute encoders, incremental encoders require a reference point or homing procedure to establish an initial position, as they don’t maintain absolute position information when powered off.
